    Death aid

    The death aid is granted once only, in a fixed amount, to a single person who submits the death registration document issued by the authorised body of the Republic of Moldova in the event of death:

    a) of the insured person in the public social insurance system, regardless of the length of contribution period completed;

    b) of a pensioner in the public social insurance system;

    c) of the unemployed person entitled to unemployment benefit;

    d) of the person who is not insured but who has completed at least 3 years of contribution period.

    In the event of the death of the uninsured person, the right to death aid shall be granted to one of the family members of the deceased person, his/her guardian or trustee or, in their absence, to the person who proves that he/she has borne the expenses arising from the death.

    The category of family member includes:

    - spouse;

    - parents;

    - children up to the age of 18 or, if they were in daytime education at an educational institution - until graduation, but until they reached the age of 23, and children with disabilities, regardless of age, if the disability was established before they reached these ages.

    The death aid shall be determined on the basis of an application submitted by a single person entitled to receive it, accompanied by the following documents: 

        a) applicant's identity card (original and copy);

        b) certificate of death registration (original and copy);

        c) where applicable, documents confirming the expenses incurred as a result of the death.

    In the case of the birth of a stillborn child, the following documents shall be attached to the application:

        a) the applicant's identity card (original and copy);

        b) certificate confirming the birth of the stillborn child issued by the medical institution;

        c) documents confirming the expenses incurred as a result of the death.

    The family member is obliged to confirm the degree of kinship by the following documents:

    a) birth certificate (original and copy);

    b) marriage certificate (original and copy).

    The application for death aid is submitted to the territorial office of social insurance in the area of the deceased's home or residence.

    Death aid may be claimed within 12 months, calculated from the day following the date of death.

    The death aid is determined and paid within 3 working days from the date of registration of the application with all the necessary documents.

    Death aid that has been determined but not paid on time are paid retroactively for a maximum of 3 calendar years from the date of registration of the application for death aid.

    The amount of the death aid is determined annually by the Law of state social insurance budget.

    The amount of the death aid granted in 2024 in the event of the death of persons, with the exception of war veterans specified in article 7 paragraph (2) item (1) letters (e)-(g) of Law No. 190/2003 on veterans, shall be 1100 MDL.

    In the event of the death of war veterans specified in article 7 paragraph (2) item (1) letters (e)-(g) of Law No. 190/2003 on veterans, the amount of death benefit in 2024 shall be 5000 MDL:

    • war veterans, among the persons who during the Second World War took part in military actions against fascist Germany on the territories of other states, being members of partisan detachments, illegalist organisations and other anti-fascist formations, who died after June 30, 2023 (specified in article 7 paragraph (2) item (1) letter (e) of Law No. 190/2003);

    war veterans, among persons participating in combat actions in Afghanistan, as well as in combat actions on the territories of other states, among servicemen and civilian employees of the Soviet Army, the Military Sea Fleet, state security bodies, collaborators of the internal affairs bodies of the former USSR and the Soviet Union. S.S.R.; workers in these categories, who were sent by the organs of state power of the former S.S.R. to other states and who participated in combat actions on their territory, who died after June 30, 2023 (specified in art. 7 paragraph (2) item (1) letter (f) of Law No. 190/2003);

    war veterans, among military staff on active service, reservists called up for concentration, volunteers and collaborators of the internal affairs bodies, the National Anti-Corruption Centre, the state security bodies and the penitentiary administration system, included in the ranks of military units and special structures in combat positions, as well as military personnel, collaborators of internal affairs bodies, state security bodies and the penitentiary administration system and civilian persons delegated to these units to carry out special missions in order to ensure the effectiveness of combat actions for the defence of the territorial integrity and independence of the Republic of Moldova (specified in art. 7 paragraph (2) item 1 letter (g) of Law No 190/2003)”.
